SOLOMON Islands young martial arts practitioner, Evamalyna Vai Haridi is focusing on the physical and mental benefits of taekwondo, and she is adamant about keeping her bond with the sport.

“In the club, we are taught that martial arts are more than just learning how to fight, it teaches us about courtesy, discipline, self-control, perseverance, and having an indomitable spirit,” Evamalyna, 22 from Tikopia Island, Temotu province told Solomon Women. “And I believe this is the greatest influence that made me join this sport.”

Earlier this year, Evamalyna enrolled with Yun’s Taekwondo Club under the guidance of local taekwondo principal instructor, Joses Dudley. Besides training in martial arts, she is currently studying at the University of the South Pacific (USP), Honiara Campus.

“In my opinion, I believe that playing Taekwondo is great because it helps in developing one’s mind and body. 

“For instance, Playing Taekwondo can help one’s mental health by increasing confidence, self-esteem, and discipline and also helps reduce stress.

“It is also beneficial for a person’s health as it can keep people active and improve their fitness,” she said.

Meanwhile, Evamalyna encourages women and girls from homes, schools, and communities in the country to must make a change by enrolling in taekwondo.

“There is nothing to be afraid or embarrassed about, you are welcome and you are encouraged to join. Taekwondo can help us be stronger in our minds or actions our bodies and our life. So to all the women and our little girls, I encourage you to come and play Taekwondo.”
