Minister of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, Hon. Cathy Nori, has acknowledged the progress and achievements made by the Solomon Islands over the past 30 years in implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
Speaking during the International World Children’s Day 2025 celebrations at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Honiara, Hon. Nori said the country has come a long way in protecting and promoting the rights and well-being of children.
“The Solomon Islands has made important strides in implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child,” she said. “Guided by the Convention’s principles, our government, together with our partners, has worked to strengthen the legal, policy, and institutional framework to uphold the rights and well-being of all children.”
The Minister highlighted that these achievements were made possible through collective efforts across the country.
“The progress we see today reflects our shared commitment and collaboration,” she said. “I want to acknowledge the ministries, provincial governments, NGOs, churches, and communities who continue to play vital roles in advancing the Convention in their respective sectors and areas of work.”
While celebrating the achievements, Hon. Nori also reminded everyone that there are still challenges ahead that must be addressed.
“As we mark 30 years since ratifying the Convention, we must renew our commitment to collective action,” she said. “The journey ahead requires stronger coordination, adequate resources, and continued commitment from all sectors — government, civil society, partners, communities, and families.”
The Minister noted that the government’s focus moving forward is to make sure every child is protected and given equal opportunities.
“Our goal is clear — to strengthen the implementation and monitoring of child-related laws and policies,” she said. “We must ensure inclusive and fair services for every child, especially those who are most vulnerable, and empower young people to meaningfully participate in shaping the future of our nation.”
Hon. Nori ended her speech with a heartfelt message, reminding everyone of the importance of listening to children.
“Every decision we make today shapes the future of our children,” she said. “To truly listen to the future means to listen to the voices of our children — their hopes, fears, and dreams — and to turn those into real action.”
“Together, let us continue to build a nation where every child is safe, valued, and given the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.”
