For Vanessa Pitanai Vavu, education is more than just earning a qualification — it is about fulfilling a dream, honouring family sacrifices, and giving back to her country, the Solomon Islands.

Vanessa, who is currently completing her Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance, described being a recipient of the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship as both an honour and a life changing opportunity.

“Looking back at my country, the Solomon Islands has faced challenges such as corruption and poor financial management. I want to be part of the solution by helping improve transparency, accountability, and financial systems for the betterment of our communities,” she shared.

One of the greatest influences in Vanessa’s life was her late grandfather, whose belief in education continues to inspire her every day.

“My grandfather always told me that education is the key to life and that it must be used wisely. His encouragement gave me the confidence to believe in myself and pursue my goals,” she said.

Vanessa first learned about the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship through friends and social media. She said the scholarship not only allowed her to further her education, but also eased the financial burden on her family while motivating her to work harder academically.

Reflecting on her university journey, Vanessa recalled one of her most challenging semesters, where balancing assignments, examinations, and deadlines became overwhelming.

“There were nights when my classmates and I stayed in the library for hours revising notes, sharing ideas, and motivating each other to keep going despite the pressure. Those experiences taught me resilience, teamwork, and perseverance,” she said.

“Every challenge became an opportunity for growth. Looking back now, I realise that every sacrifice and late night study session helped shape the person I am today,” she added.

Completing her degree holds special meaning for Vanessa and her family, particularly because it fulfils a dream her late grandfather deeply wished for her.

“His belief in education and a better future for our family continues to guide me. I carry his words with me every day,” she said emotionally.

After graduation, Vanessa plans to return home and use her accounting and finance knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the Solomon Islands. She hopes to support better financial management, accountability, and transparency within both public and private sectors.

She also hopes to inspire young people in her community to value education and pursue their goals with determination.

“Education is our life guide, so we must guide it well. It is not just about passing exams, but about shaping our future and creating opportunities for ourselves and others,” Vanessa said.

Her journey stands as a powerful reminder that with determination, resilience, and the support of loved ones, dreams can become reality.
