Four women journalists from the Solomon Islands were among a group of eight local media professionals who took part in an international media visit to Australia last week, from 1 to 8 June 2025.

The week-long visit was more than just professional development—it was a chance to connect, learn, and share experiences with media peers across the region. The exchange is part of a broader effort to grow the Solomon Islands–Australia Media Sector Partnership and create lasting connections for the future.

The trip aimed to build a better understanding of Australia and strengthen ties between the two countries’ media sectors.

The journalists—Ruthina Koroa, Indy Maelasia, Georgina Maka’a, and Loretta Manele—come from different backgrounds and provinces across the Solomon Islands, but all share a passion for storytelling and a commitment to public service journalism.

Ruthina Koroa is the Station Manager of ZFM 99.5, the country’s first privately owned radio station. From Temotu province, Ruthina has led major programs including election coverage, cultural music shows, and national events. She also completed a management program in Australia in 2024 and was proud to return this year as part of this exchange.

For Indy Maelasia, a reporter at the Island Sun newspaper, this trip marked her first visit to Australia and her first Australian-funded media training. Originally from Malaita province, Indy is most proud of her coverage of the 2024 National General Election—an experience she says helped her grow both personally and professionally.

Georgina Maka’a, co-owner of In-depth Solomon’s, started her journalism career in 2007 and has completed studies in Papua New Guinea and a management program in Australia. A native of Makira province, Georgina continues to invest in the growth of independent media in the Solomon Islands.

Loretta Manele, Sub Editor at the Island Sun, began her career in 2017 and has developed a strong interest in political reporting, particularly parliamentary coverage. From Isabel and Malaita provinces, this was her first-ever trip to Australia.
