Women form the Rennell and Belona provinces are very proud of their traditional weaving and that they are keeping their beautiful culture alive.
Rose Teahi, from the small island of Rennell, is among the many women who sell their woven baskets at the Art Gallery area every day.
Rose, a mother of five children, started weaving baskets when she was a child, taught by her mother on Rennell.
“I started marketing after I got married and came to live in town with my husband,” she told Solomon Women.
“My husband was a teacher and that made me a teacher’s wife and a house wife because I had no job and did nothing to earn that money.
Rose didn’t like waiting for her husband’s teacher’s salary. Instead she decided to use her skills to earn money to help her family.
“I decided to start using my skills to weave traditional products from my province to sell and found out that I earned a good amount of money,” she said.
“This small business has helped me a lot especially as a mother. I have my own money to use and do not depend on my husband’s income.
“I would like to encourage all house wives out there to stand up and do what they think that is best for them to do,” she said.
“Using our own skills and talents to be useful is very important. It is a gift from God so that we can help ourselves while living on this earth.”
