Emily Laura Chan, 18, who is currently doing her form 4 studies at the Anglican-owned Saint Nicholas College in Honiara and is a granddaughter of the owner of the Honiara Hotel Sir Tommy Chan, recently told sponsors and supporters that she was absolutely delighted to represent the country as a role model for youths in the Solomon Islands.

“Am preparing myself; ready, proud and confident to represent my country in the regional pageant,” she told Solomon Women.

Emily Chan was also the youngest contestant in the Miss Solomon Islands pageant this year.

“Today, it’s quite obvious to see an increase trend of unemployment in the youthful population of our country. The reason behind the mass youth unemployment rate is the lack of education attainment.

“I want to see children being offered free education so that all children may have the chance to go through the education system so that they all may have a better future without poverty. This is true because they are the future generations of this nation,” she added.

The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant was established in 1987 by the Government of Samoa as a regional event to identify and promote the attributes, intelligence and talents of young Pacific Island women.

It gives recognition to young Pacific Island women and their contributions to regional affairs and their ability to advance in diverse fields. It is an event that uniquely promotes the South Pacific and its holiday destinations and brings together young women from all sectors of the Pacific for the purpose of promoting and attracting worldwide attention to their unique attributes.
