THE path to achieve a career in education was a childhood dream and passion for Deilah Omani from Malaita province. The desire to teach in front of students in the classroom has indeed reminded her to explore more about the pathway to become a teacher.

The young mother of two is currently undertaking a Diploma in Teaching Secondary English at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), Panatina Campus. This year would mark the final year of her study at the University.

“I dreamt to become a teacher since childhood. I desire to teach the young generation of future leaders of the country and to create them a strong learning environment that will enhance their academic achievement.

“I believe that it is important to develop students’ social and relationship skills that will last throughout their lives and will make them become good citizens of Solomon Islands,” she expressed.

Mrs. Omani recalled that she left in 2012 and got married, but has continued to pursue her dreams to become a teacher.

“I opted to embark on further studies at SINU because I strongly believed my mission to achieve a career as a school teacher is not yet over.

“Am pretty happy to say that despite I have taken an early turn to the road of marriage, I continued to pursue my career dream, because I believe it would immensely benefit my family in the future,” she added.

Teaching is the specialized application of knowledge, skills, and attributes designed to provide unique services to meet the educational needs of the individual and society.

The choice of learning activities whereby the goals of education are realized in the school is the responsibility of the teaching profession.

Mrs. Omani’s children are currently living with their grandparents in Malaita, whist she is undergoing studies in Honiara. Both children are female and they are both aged 4 and 3 respectively.

“It’s sometimes quite uncomfortable to be away from your children and not knowing what might happen to them without your supervision or guidance.

“But despite my sense of isolation, am very much thankful to my beloved parents for taking up the responsibility, commitment, and confidence of looking after my children,” she told Solomon Women.

Meanwhile, she encouraged young mothers with similar experiences to take on their challenges and to face the reality of achieving their future aims and objectives.

“Do not make assumptions or let doubts overshadow your dreams and ambitions but make progress to achieve the future goals,” she said.
