At the Pacific Women Mediators Workshop this week in Honiara, local social researcher, Kicchener Bird, spoke about the vital role women play in building peace.
“Women are not only the peace builders, but they are the foundation of where peace is built at home,” Mr. Bird said in an interview with the Solomon Women’s Newspaper during the inaugural colloquium.
As a participant in the workshop, Mr. Bird explained how hearing the experiences and stories of women from different Pacific countries inspired him. “These experiences motivate me to pass on that message to other men. Advocacy for women must grow, and men need to recognize the space that rightfully belongs to women,” he said.
Coming from a matrilineal society, Mr. Bird understands the value of women and believes they should be respected. “Women have not only mediated peace, but they are the living example of peace within our society,” he added.
The Pacific Women Mediators Network workshop aims to celebrate women-led peacebuilding efforts across the region. It highlights the importance of including women’s voices and experiences in peace and security work.
Mr. Bird stressed the power of women from different backgrounds coming together. “Women from different ethnicities and experiences weave their stories into a strong platform for peace. Peacebuilding starts at home, spreads to communities, and grows to the national level. Peace should become a bridge connecting all Pacific Island countries,” he said.
This workshop shines a light on women as the true foundation where lasting peace is built — beginning in the home and reaching far beyond.
