In the corridors of public service in the Solomon Islands, where policy, leadership and reform intersect, Christina Mitini stands as a quiet yet formidable force. As Deputy Chief Electoral Officer at the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC), her journey is not defined by noise or self-promotion, but by discipline, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to service.

From Development Work to National Impact.

Christina’s career spans more than a decade in the development sector, beginning with her early involvement in elections and expanding into international work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). There, she contributed to areas such as crisis prevention, disaster response, resilience, and sustainable development.

But it was her decision to return home that marked a defining shift.

After ten years with the United Nations, Christina joined the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission in December 2021. Her return was not just a career move; it was a conscious choice to give back, applying global experience to national progress.

Her academic journey reflects the same commitment. With qualifications in commerce, law, and legal practice—and a Master of Business Administration at the University of the South Pacific—Christina has built a strong intellectual foundation to match her practical experience.

Driving Electoral Reform Behind the Scenes.

Much of Christina’s impact lies behind the scenes, in the complex and often unseen work of electoral reform.

As part of the secretariat team supporting the electoral reform task force, she played a key role in shaping legal amendments aimed at strengthening the country’s electoral processes. The task force was established in response to recommendations from the 2018 elections observation report, and its work required extensive national consultation.

Christina helped coordinate discussions across provinces, including with the Honiara City Council, ensuring that diverse voices contributed to the reform process. She also supported the conduct of multiple by-elections over several years, an effort requiring precision, coordination and trust.

While she is quick to credit her team, her contribution has been instrumental in advancing more robust and inclusive electoral systems in the Solomon Islands.

Inspired by Women, Guided by Purpose.

Behind Christina’s professional achievements lies a powerful network of influence.

She draws inspiration from leading Solomon Islands women such as Mary-Louise O’Callaghan Tuhanuku, Ruth Liloqula, Judith Fangalasu, the late Josephine Teakeni and Ethel Sigimanu; figures known for their courage, advocacy and leadership.

Closer to home, her mother played a defining role, instilling in her the value of education and discipline from an early age.

Her worldview was also shaped by exposure to politics and national issues as a young person, guided by her late uncle, former Prime Minister Solomon Mamaloni, and her aunt Hilda Kari. Through them, she developed an early understanding of political systems, global challenges and national responsibility.

Books, too, have been constant companions—works by leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Golda Meir, Eleanor Roosevelt and Michelle Obama have helped shape her thinking and leadership style.

A Role Model for the Next Generation.

Today, Christina has become a source of inspiration for many young women across the country.

She understands their aspirations intimately, because she once shared them. Her message is simple, but deeply rooted in her own experience: stay focused, stay disciplined, and keep going.

Beyond her official role, she remains actively engaged in community development. From supporting the construction of bathroom facilities in North-West Guadalcanal to helping women explore opportunities in commercial farming, her work reflects a belief that leadership extends beyond office walls.

Navigating Challenges with Resilience.

Christina’s journey has not been without its challenges.

Entering and advancing within the public service demands more than qualifications—it requires resilience, patience, and the ability to build trust over time. In a system shaped by hierarchy and expectations, proving one’s capability is an ongoing process.

The challenges are further compounded in male-dominated environments, where differing perspectives and cultural dynamics can create additional barriers.

Yet Christina has navigated these complexities with quiet confidence, relying on competence, consistency and integrity to earn respect and credibility.

Redefining Leadership for Women.

For Christina, leadership is not about titles, it is about responsibility.

She believes women bring unique strengths to leadership, including empathy, discipline, and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively. However, she also stresses that success requires intentional effort: mastering time management, building strong internal networks, and developing expertise, particularly in areas such as human resource management.

Her philosophy is clear: women should not aim to simply participate, but to excel.

Balancing Purpose and Personal Life.

Away from her professional responsibilities, Christina manages the delicate balance between career and personal life with careful planning and discipline.

Her approach is practical, ensuring that progress is made daily, both at work and at home. It is a balance that reflects her broader philosophy: that success is built not on occasional effort, but on consistent, focused action.

Economic Empowerment as a Priority.

One issue Christina speaks about with particular urgency is the economic empowerment of women.

She sees untapped potential across communities, women with ideas, ambition and drive, but without access to the capital needed to turn vision into reality.

Her advocacy focuses on bridging this gap, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, where opportunities for financial independence and contribution to the national economy are significant.

The Power of Focus.

If there is one principle that defines Christina Mitini, it is focus.

It is the thread that runs through her career, her leadership, and her personal life. Focus, for her, is not just about setting goals, it is about committing to them fully, despite challenges, distractions or setbacks.

Reading, Growth and the Next Generation.

Christina also champions reading as a powerful tool for growth.

She credits her own intellectual development and critical thinking to a lifelong habit of reading—something she now encourages others, especially mothers, to pass on to their children.

For her, books are more than knowledge, they are windows to the world.

A Quiet Force for Change.

In a world that often celebrates loud leadership, Christina Mitini represents something different.

Her strength lies in consistency. Her leadership is grounded in service. And her impact is measured not in visibility, but in results.

From a young woman inspired by leaders around her to a key figure shaping electoral systems in the Solomon Islands, her journey is a testament to what can be achieved through focus, humility and hard work.

And for the many young women watching her path, she offers a powerful reminder: meaningful change does not always begin with a loud voice—it often begins with quiet determination.
