Temotu-Vatu MP Hon. Freda Tuki Soriocomua has called for stronger governance, accountability and transparency to strengthen the Government’s economic transformation agenda, warning that economic growth cannot be sustained without effective public institutions.
Speaking in Parliament during debate on the Governor-General’s Speech from the Throne, Tuki said the country’s economic ambitions must go hand in hand with stable, transparent and accountable institutions.
“Economic growth cannot exist in a vacuum. It requires stable, transparent and accountable institutions,” she said.
Tuki said the Government must commit to modernising the public service, addressing complacency and strengthening transparency across executive and administrative machinery.
She stressed that the public service must demonstrate integrity and deliver tangible results to Solomon Islanders in both rural and urban communities.
Her comments come as the Government outlines an ambitious programme aimed at transforming the national economy and strengthening key institutions.
Tuki welcomed the Government’s focus on national stability and institutional reform, saying these were important in creating an environment where economic participation could grow securely. She also referred to the national motto, “To lead is to serve,” saying those entrusted with leadership must demonstrate a commitment to service and accountability.
For Tuki, the success of the Government’s economic agenda will therefore depend not only on investment and development projects, but also on the strength and integrity of the institutions responsible for delivering them.
She said Parliament must approach the legislative challenges ahead with rigor while maintaining a spirit of unity and service in the national interest.
Tuki ultimately supported the motion, signalling her alignment with the Government’s vision for a secure, peaceful and prosperous Solomon Islands.
