Women in Information Technology Solomon Islands (WITSI) has renewed its call for more women to consider careers in cybersecurity following a successful Cyber Journey Refresher event held as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
The event brought together WITSI members and partners both in person at Heritage Park Hotel and virtually through Zoom for an evening focused on learning, networking, and professional development. Participants engaged in discussions and activities designed to increase awareness of cybersecurity and encourage greater female participation in the growing digital sector.

Guest speaker Samia Sarhane, Senior Manager in Cyber at Deloitte, shared practical insights into the cybersecurity profession, highlighting career opportunities, industry challenges, and the importance of developing technical and professional skills. Her message encouraged women to step forward and explore opportunities within the cybersecurity field.
Adding to the evening’s inspiration, Laura Wauchope, First Secretary for Stability and Security at the Australian High Commission, delivered a message of encouragement to participants, including speaking directly to members in Pidgin.
Jennifer Adema, Deputy Team Leader of the Australia-Solomon Islands Partnership for Justice, also encouraged women to believe in their abilities, continue building their skills, and support each other in their professional journeys.

A key theme throughout the event was the importance of women empowering other women. Organisers noted that creating supportive networks and mentorship opportunities is essential for strengthening the digital sector and increasing women’s representation in technology related careers.
Participants also wore pink ribbons in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, demonstrating solidarity for women’s health and wellbeing alongside efforts to advance women’s participation in technology.

WITSI acknowledged the support of the Solomon Islands Submarine Cable Company, whose sponsorship helped make the event possible and contributed to ongoing cybersecurity awareness initiatives in the country.
The Cyber Journey Refresher highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity in everyday life and reinforced the message that women have a vital role to play in shaping a safer, stronger, and more inclusive digital future for the Solomon Islands.
