The Catholic women of Buma Parish in West Kwaio, Malaita Province gathered in unity and purpose to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, bringing together mothers and women leaders from Zones One to Eight.
More than a religious celebration, the event became an empowering space where women honoured Mother Mary not only as the mother of Jesus Christ, but as a symbol of strength, humility, courage and unwavering faith qualities they continue to embody in their families and communities.
Speaking during the celebration, Christina Betea, leader of the Buma Parish Women’s Group, expressed deep joy at seeing women from across the parish come together in solidarity.
Betea said the gathering offered women a moment to reflect on their identity as mothers, leaders and caretakers of faith within their homes and villages. She described Mother Mary as a model of resilience, compassion and spiritual leadership an example that continues to guide Catholic women today.
“We have great joy that we have gathered to celebrate this important day with the universal Church,” she said.
She welcomed all women who travelled from the eight zones, acknowledging their faithfulness, sacrifice and commitment despite the challenges of village life. Betea encouraged them to continue supporting one another, sharing love and strengthening the bonds that hold families and communities together.
“You are great and honoured to be here to celebrate together as Catholic mothers and to honour Mother Mary,” she said.
She prayed that the celebration would bring renewed strength, meaningful blessings and deeper faith as the women continue their spiritual journey and daily responsibilities.
The Assumption celebration remains a powerful annual moment for Buma Parish, one that unites women, uplifts their voices and reinforces their vital role in shaping faith, family and community life.
