LOCAL women journalists dominated the prestigious Media Association of Solomon Islands Media Excellence Awards 2024 over the weekend, setting a new benchmark for the industry.
The event, held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara on Saturday, saw a record number of six (6) women journalists honored for their outstanding contributions to the field.
This year’s MASI Awards highlighted the power of women’s voices in media, with women taking home awards in nearly every category. From TV Journalist reporting to Editor of the Year Award, female journalists showcased their prowess, resilience, and commitment to uncovering the truth.
The top 6 women journalists and organizations awarded at the MASI 2024 award night are as follows:
- TV Journalist of the Year: Chrisnrita Leong (ABC Pacific)
- Radio Journalist of the Year: Eliza Kukutu (SIBC)
- Court Reporter of the Year: Assumpta Buchanan (Solomon Star)
- Broadcaster of the Year: Elizabeth Osifelo (Tavuli News)
- Production Award: Cheryl Bera (SIBC)
- Editor of the Year Award: Mavis Nishimura Podokolo (Island Sun)
This year’s event highlighted the critical role women play in shaping local stories. The success of women journalists at the MASI Awards not only celebrates their achievements but also signifies a broader shift towards gender equality in journalism in the country.
Likewise, the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) Media Excellence Awards 2024, themed “Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Solomon Islands Media,” brought together media professionals from the print, radio, and television sectors to recognize outstanding contributions in journalism.
This year’s event also celebrated the achievements of local journalists amidst challenges in the Solomon Islands media landscape.
