25-year-old Pauline Mose is a young and talented hairdresser with a passion to recreate her clients with a completely new look of choice.
Hailed from Guadalcanal, Mose has learned to become a hairstylist (dresser) in 2015 when she was employed at the Trends Salon in Honiara.
“It has been my passion since I was a little girl to be a hairdresser, but the only talent I understood at that time was the art of hair braiding.
“However, it all started when I was unable to complete my units whilst undergoing a certificate program in the School of Tourism and Hospitality at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) due to the lack of school fees in 2011.
“I later decided to join Youth @ Work program in 2015 to help me seek a job opportunity and to hopefully earn money to complete my units at SINU,” she told Solomon Women.
After she joined the Youth @ Work program, Pauline found herself a job at Trends Salon as a hairdresser.
“It was at Trends that I started to learn more and improved my knowledge and talent in hairdressing,” said Pauline.
She first went through body spur training and later she went through hairdressing training.
“I started with training and observing and after a few weeks, I started with my first customers. How I learned fast and improved my skills was through the challenges I faced in this job.” She added that as someone who has no previous knowledge about the art of hairdressing. “I also faced many challenges with my boss and customers.”
“My first challenge encountered was with my first client. I made a mistake and my boss rightly corrected me in front of my client.
“With these challenges and mistakes, it helped me to improve my work as a hairdresser,” said Pauline.
Being a hairdresser, as Pauline Mose has put it, is more than just about hair. It is about making personal connections with your clients. At the moment, she has a strong passion and bigger dreams for her new job.
“My new job has aspired me to achieve bigger dreams in the future. I plan to establish my salon.”
Pauline encouraged girls who have left school and have gone through the same path she has experienced to have a strong mind to explore other opportunities.
“I would like to encourage girls who have left school and have gone through the same path as mine to must have a strong mind to your passion and dream.
“Who knows maybe my interest in tourism might link with my talent as a hairdresser.
“It will indeed be hard to imagine something you want to become in the future, especially on something you do not know about, but my message is that your passion is your future and whatever you do, you must have faith in yourself, that one day you will be that somebody.”
