A Solomon Islands National University student is looking forward to giving back to the country and her rural community after completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Tropical Science and majoring in Agri-Business this year.

Victoria Vugulu from the province of Guadalcanal and Western is married with three children and has continued with her studies for the past four years, this year marks her final year at the SINU’s Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.

Thinking back to why she chose to study agriculture, Victoria said her people depend on gardening or agricultural farming to sustain their livelihood and on the same note agriculture can also contribute more to the economy of the country.

“Although my rural community enjoys the benefits of gardening or farming, they don’t know or understand the challenges they faced concerning climate change and soil fertility.

“My main focus after I graduate is to help my people how to add value to their garden crops and cope with the changes they might face concerning climate change.

“The potential to invest more in the agriculture sector of the country can benefit the economy of the country in the future.

“I believe agri-business should be prioritized now and in the future. The means of converting agriculture into business – adding value to local crops for exports that will benefit the farmers and the country,” Victoria Vugulu said.
