THE Honiara Council of Women celebrated its revitalization with a two-day event at Futsal Hub at the Multipurpose Hall in Honiara, supported by the Honiara City Council’s Women’s Development Division’s Desk.

Women’s groups from neighborhoods stretching from Kongulai to Lunga on the outskirts of Honiara gathered in large numbers, celebrating the return of an organization dedicated to empowering local women. Anne Bufata, President of the Honiara Council of Women, expressed her enthusiasm for the revival, noting that the council had been dormant for the past nine years.

“This year, in June, the Solomon Islands National Council of Women took the initiative to revive the Honiara Council of Women, specifically for the women living in the city,” Bufata stated. She explained that over the last year, a comprehensive registration process was undertaken across the 12 wards in Honiara, resulting in the formation of groups where women could come together and organize.

“To date, we have successfully registered 4,000 members with the Honiara Council of Women,” Bufata added. “This program is not only a celebration but also a demonstration that the Honiara Council of Women is active and visible in our community.”

The event featured various sessions, including speeches and workshops aimed at empowering attendees. Women from different communities participated and shared their experiences and fostering connections.

The revival of the Honiara Council of Women signifies a renewed commitment to uplifting women in the region, providing them with a platform to unite and express their talents. As the council moves forward, it aims to continue creating opportunities for women in Honiara and beyond.
