Ms Konofilia, a youth from Laundry Valley community, says the recent two‑day financial literacy training has made a meaningful difference in how she manages and grows her small fish‑and‑chips business.
The mother of two told Isles Media Women’s Desk, Solomon Women, that she felt privileged to attend the course, describing it as a turning point in her understanding of money. “I learned many skills that help me manage my money better,” she said.
Her fish‑and‑chips stall provides daily income for her family, and she says her children motivate her to keep pushing forward even when earnings are small.
During the training, participants learned about setting clear goals using the SMART goal concept and planning for the future. She said one new and exciting idea was the use of a vision board , a visual tool that helps guide personal and business goals.
Ms Konofilia said the course has changed her mindset about spending and decision‑making. “I learned how to control money decisions and be more mindful about spending,” she said. “There are many wants and needs, but now I only buy what is necessary.”
She also highlighted financial challenges faced by many young people, especially the struggle to pay school fees. She believes training like this equips youth with practical skills they can use to find employment or start small businesses of their own.
She encouraged more workshops to reach youth across the community. “Please don’t give up,” she said. “Good and bad things happen, but keep your head up, stay positive, and use your money wisely.”
The training forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen financial skills among small business owners and young people in the area, helping them build confidence and resilience in managing their livelihoods.
