CLEANING is often viewed as a tiresome, thankless task, but for Sylvia Laubuma, it’s a labor of love and service. A mother of two living in Honiara, Sylvia works as a cleaner for Bright Shine Commercial and Residential Cleaning Services, a role she started in mid-2024.
In an exclusive interview with Solomon Women, Sylvia shared how she finds meaning and pride in her work, urging others to see cleaning as more than just a chore.
For Sylvia, cleaning goes beyond the act of tidying spaces—it’s about creating a comfortable and healthy environment that enhances the lives of those who work or live in the spaces she cares for.
“Cleaners are the unrecognized heroes of society. We keep workplaces, homes, and other spaces clean, which contributes to a healthier and more comfortable environment,” Sylvia explained. “Unfortunately, most people see cleaning as a low-status job, but they don’t realize the far-reaching impact it has on the well-being of others.”
As a hardworking mother, Sylvia views her job not just as a means of income, but as a responsibility to improve the lives of others. “Cleanliness brings comfort, health, and happiness, and I’m proud to be part of that process every day,” she said with a smile.
Sylvia’s commitment to her work is not just about the physical act of cleaning—it’s about the positive impact it has on the people who enjoy the spaces she maintains. “I feel good knowing that my work makes others feel comfortable and happy in their environment,” she said. “When I see the results of my efforts, it clears my mind and gives me a sense of accomplishment.”
While cleaning may seem simple, Sylvia acknowledges the challenges that come with the job. From long hours to the physical strain of the work, it’s not an easy role. However, Sylvia finds motivation in the gratitude she receives from clients, whether it’s a simple thank-you or a smile from someone walking into a freshly cleaned room.
“Every job, no matter how small, contributes to a bigger picture,” she explained. “When I remind myself of this, it keeps me going, no matter how tough the day gets.”
Sylvia’s story is a powerful reminder of the value of all types of work, especially jobs that often go unnoticed. She encourages others to see the importance of being a cleaner and to appreciate the impact that such roles have on the environment and the people who inhabit it.
“I am always grateful for this job,” she said. “It may not always be glamorous, but it’s a job that makes a difference, and I’m proud to be part of that every day.”
