The Honiara City Council (HCC) Environmental Health Department has announced stricter food safety measures requiring all vendors selling cooked and ready-to-eat food within Honiara to obtain a valid Food Permit before operating.

Under the new requirements, vendors at Honiara Central Market and those traveling from other provinces to sell food in the city must first complete approved Food Safety Training and pass a thorough inspection conducted by HCC Health Inspectors before a permit can be issued.

The regulations apply to a wide range of food products, including cooked meals, fresh-cut fruits, fish and seafood, chicken and meat products, rice and noodle dishes, baked goods, pancakes, ready-to-eat snacks, and prepared drinks and fruit juices.

HCC Environmental Health Officers have begun immediate enforcement activities, including regular inspections of food vendors. Authorities warn that any vendor operating without proof of Food Safety Training or a valid Food Permit may have their food removed from sale and could face further enforcement action under health regulations.

According to the Environmental Health Department, the initiative is aimed at strengthening food hygiene standards, reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses, and ensuring consumers have access to safe and properly prepared food.

Key Message from HCC

  • No Food Safety Training, No Food Permit.
  • No Inspection Approval, No Food Permit.
  • No Food Permit, No Sale of Cooked or Ready-to-Eat Food.

The Honiara City Council is encouraging all food vendors to comply with the new requirements to help protect public health and maintain safer food environments throughout the city.
