ELIZA Kukutu, an inspiring radio journalist in the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, has been honored with the prestigious Radio Journalist Award at the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) Media Excellence Awards 2024.
This award is a testament to her dedication, talent, and the positive impact she has made in the field of radio and broadcasting journalism in the country.
Eliza, 28, hails from Numbu village in the north-east region of Guadalcanal Province and has always been passionate about storytelling and informing the public. Her academic journey led her to the University of the South Pacific (USP), where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Politics in 2021. Shortly after graduation, Eliza joined Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) as a news reporter and quickly demonstrated her skills and commitment, eventually becoming the sub-editor.
Receiving the Radio Journalist Award is a significant achievement for Eliza, who expressed her gratitude and joy.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award. It reflects the hard work and support from my editor and colleagues at SIBC, who have guided me throughout my career,” she told SOLOMON WOMEN.
Eliza’s inspiring journey and recent award highlight her role as a beacon of excellence in the Solomon Islands’ media landscape. Her story and experience serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, community support, and the impact of quality journalism.
Her experience has not been without challenges, especially as a woman in the evolving media industry of the Solomon Islands. She acknowledges these difficulties but feels fortunate to have mentors and supportive seniors.
“Being a woman in this growing media industry, I find that almost at times challenging. I am fortunate to have seniors that I can look to for direction whenever I need help.
“We are relatively small compared to other media organizations in the region, but I am always proud of the collaboration that all out members continue to do in supporting each other,” Eliza said.
The Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) Media Excellence Awards 2024 are designed to recognize and celebrate the efforts of media practitioners in the Solomon Islands. Eliza praised MASI for their initiative to honor journalists and their contributions.
“I would also like to acknowledge MASI for taking the initiative to recognize media practitioners through this media excellence award. Thank you for recognizing the tireless effort of our journalists and our media practitioners in the country.
“Everyone should be commended for the hard work and dedication that we contribute to daily in our respective media organizations,” she said.
Despite her success, Eliza remains humble and eager to continue learning and growing in her career. She believes that each day presents new opportunities for improvement.
“I am still learning and growing in this career. I believe that I still have a long way to go, and every day is a new learning experience for me. With this achievement, I am motivated to do better every day,” she said.
