A Papua New Guinea-born educator, Desma Mapita, who has lived in the Solomon Islands since 2015, has been recognised for her academic excellence after receiving two major awards: High Distinction in her Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and Change, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Award.

Desma’s journey into education was not planned at first. She originally studied electrical work, but later changed direction when her institute offered a Bachelor’s programme. That decision changed her life.

“I love being around the students and everything they do,” she said. “That has inspired me to continue in the journey of teaching.”

While working as a full-time teacher, Desma continued her studies, a challenge she described as difficult but rewarding. “Balancing teaching and studying was not easy, but seeing my performance reports made it all worth it,” she shared.

She said her success was not hers alone. “This award reflects my hard work and commitment, but also the support from my benefactors, bosses, mentors, and everyone who stood by me in one way or another.”

Faith plays a big role in her life. “Every day I wake up, I thank God for everything He continues to bless me with. All glory goes back to God,” she said. Her advice to others is simple: “Put God first in all you do, and He will help you through everything in life.”

As a teacher, Desma aims to go beyond academics. “I encourage my students not only in knowledge, but also in values and morals. Skills alone are not enough to succeed in life,” she explained.

She said helping struggling students has kept her grounded and humble.

Receiving the Vice-Chancellor’s Award came as a surprise. “I am very grateful and happy. I hope this award gives me strength to keep doing my best for my students,” Mapita said.
