SAMANTHA Rofo of Isabel province has been representing the Solomon Islands in track and field events for years, now she hopes to prepare herself to participate in the upcoming Pacific Games 2023 in Honiara.

She has represented her home province of Isabel in the previous Solomon Games and also the country in both regional and international competitions like the 2016 Melanesian Championships in Suva, Fiji, and the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, she managed to break her record in the 400 meters at the Melanesian Championships, clocking 58.88 seconds.

“I started to involve in sports in my early high school days with a particular interest in athletics sports. I initially participated in school competitions and later in national competitions,” she told SOLOMON WOMEN.

However, young Samantha’s participation in active sports took a negative impact in 2019 when she got involved in an accident that affected her leg and later forced her out of the sporting scene.

Nevertheless, through her sheer determination and resilient character, she later bounced back and now she’s more than committed to preparing herself with the country’s athletes to represent the country again in para-sports.

“The incident forced me out of sports, however, this year, I’ve decided to be back into sports and hope to represent my beloved country again in this year’s Pacific Games in November.

“I also want to acknowledge my immediate family and close friends for their strong words of encouragement and motivation to ensure the continuation of my career in sports; without them, I will not be here today,” she expressed.

With the country’s para-sports team now in active preparation for the Pacific Games 2023, the young mother now focuses on her scheduled weekly physical and mental preparations at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS) training complex, east of Honiara.

Samantha’s eyes to competing in three sports i.e., discuss, javelin, powerlifting and shot put.
