THE Faculty of Education and Humanities (FEH) at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 with an engaging and thought-provoking ‘Tok Stori’ session centered on this year’s theme: Accelerate Action’. The event brought together female faculty members and male supporters in an open dialogue about the importance of accelerating progress toward gender equality.
The highlight of the celebration was a short yet powerful address from the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Patricia Rodie, who emphasised the urgent need for collective action. In her remarks, she noted that at the current rate of progress, full gender parity would not be achieved until the year 2158, stressing that such a prolonged wait will affect current initiatives to address gender equality issues experienced at all levels in our society today. She urged women and men alike to take decisive steps to break barriers, challenge biases, and foster inclusive environments that empower women and girls.
“At SINU, we recognise the invaluable contributions of our female staff and students. You are leaders, innovators, educators, and change-makers. Your voices matter. Your ambitions are valid. And your success is not just personal—it is a victory for us all,” Dr. Patricia Rodie stated.
The ‘Tok Stori’ session provided a platform for women to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations, reinforcing the importance of solidarity in the journey toward gender equity. Participants discussed practical ways to accelerate action, from advocating for inclusive policies to fostering mentorship and leadership opportunities for women in academia and beyond.
Rev Dr. Ben Wate, Head of School of Humanities at FEH, in his contribution towards the Tok Stori emphasised the need for women not to focus on their vulnerability. Rather, women and girls should source ways to accelerate change that are relevant in today’s context.
As the event concluded, attendees reaffirmed their commitment to advancing gender equality, echoing the call to ensure that no woman or girl is left behind. The celebration served as both a reflection on past achievements and a rallying point for continued advocacy and action.
International Women’s Day 2025 marks another significant step for FEH and SINU in championing gender equality and women’s empowerment. With strong voices and unwavering determination, the journey to a more equitable future continues.
