In Auki, Malaita Province, Vivian Idute’e is turning her love for sewing and baking into a small business that supports her family and serves her community.

From sewing beautiful dresses and school uniforms to baking cakes for birthdays, weddings and other special occasions, Mrs Idute’e has spent nearly 10 years building her home-based business, Auki Fashion & Occasional Cake.

Her journey shows how passion, determination and faith can help turn simple skills into an opportunity to earn an income and build a better future.

For Mrs Idute’e, the business began with two skills she enjoyed and wanted to develop further.

She learned sewing from her mother, who encouraged her to practise and improve her skills. After getting married, she developed her baking skills by watching YouTube videos and learning how to prepare and decorate cakes.

Over time, she decided to combine the two skills under one business, allowing her to serve customers looking for both clothing and cakes for different occasions.

“Starting this business has not always been easy, but with God’s guidance, hard work, and the support of my customers, I have continued to grow,” she said.

Her business is guided by the slogan, “Bake to Delight, Stitch to Perfection,” which reflects her commitment to creativity, quality and customer satisfaction.

For Mrs Idute’e, baking and sewing are not simply ways to earn money. They are also opportunities to bring happiness to other people through work that is meaningful to them.

“To me, every cake and every sewing project is an opportunity to make someone happy,” she said.

The slogan has a special meaning for her. “Bake to Delight” represents her aim to prepare cakes with good taste, attractive designs and care. “Stitch to Perfection” reflects the attention she gives to sewing clothes that fit well and meet her customers’ expectations.

Through these services, she hopes to build a business that people in Auki and other parts of Malaita can trust.

Serving customers through sewing and baking

Auki Fashion & Occasional Cake offers a range of services to meet the needs of individuals, families and the wider community.

Its sewing services include dresses, school uniforms, men’s shirts, skirts, trousers, wedding outfits and other clothing items.

The baking side prepares cakes for birthdays, weddings, engagements and other celebrations. Customers can request different flavours, sizes and designs to suit their preferences and special occasions.

By bringing both services together, Mrs Idute’e makes it easier for customers to find what they need without having to look far for someone to provide the service.

Whether a family needs school uniforms for children or a cake to celebrate an important event, she aims to provide quality work and friendly service.

“Having both services under one business allows me to serve customers for different occasions, from sewing beautiful dresses and uniforms to making delicious cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations,” she said.

Although she operates from home, Mrs Idute’e remains committed to serving customers in Auki and accepting orders from other parts of Malaita Province.

She wants every customer to feel welcome and satisfied with the work she provides.

“Although I operate from home, I am committed to serving my customers in Auki and welcoming orders from other parts of Malaita Province. My goal is to make every customer feel valued and satisfied with the services they receive,” she said.

Her home-based business also allows her to use the skills she has developed over the years to contribute to her family’s needs while providing useful services to the community.

Overcoming the challenges

Like many small business owners, Mrs Idute’e faces challenges in keeping her business running.

One of the biggest is limited finances, particularly when purchasing sewing materials, baking ingredients and other supplies needed to complete customer orders.

The rising cost of materials and ingredients also makes it difficult to manage business expenses while keeping prices affordable for customers.

At the same time, she must balance sewing orders, cake orders and family responsibilities. This becomes especially challenging during busy periods when several customers need their orders completed around the same time.

However, these difficulties have not stopped her from continuing with her business.

Mrs Idute’e said she has learned to manage her challenges through patience, careful planning, hard work and determination.

“I try to manage my time wisely, organise customer orders, and use my resources carefully. I have also learned the importance of setting fair prices that reflect the cost of materials and the time spent on each order,” she said.

She also continues to depend on her faith for strength and guidance as she works to overcome the difficulties.

The challenges have taught her to become more responsible, creative and careful with the resources available to her.

Rather than giving up when things become difficult, she continues to learn from her experiences and look for ways to improve her work.

Customer support keeps her motivated

Despite the challenges, one of the most rewarding parts of running Auki Fashion & Occasional Cake is seeing customers happy with the services they receive.

Mrs Idute’e said positive feedback gives her confidence and encourages her to keep improving her sewing and baking skills.

“When customers appreciate the taste and designs of my cakes or are satisfied with the fitting and style of their clothes, it gives me confidence and motivates me to continue improving,” she said.

She is especially grateful when customers return to place new orders or recommend her business to their family members and friends.

For her, this support shows that customers value the work she does and trust her to meet their needs.

“Their trust reminds me that my hard work is making a difference. Every order, whether big or small, is important to me because it gives me an opportunity to serve someone and build a good relationship with my customers,” she said.

These relationships have become an important part of her business journey.

Each completed order gives her another opportunity to improve her work, learn from customers and strengthen the reputation of Auki Fashion & Occasional Cake.

She believes that with continued customer support, dedication and God’s guidance, the business can grow further and become a blessing to her family and community.

Encouraging other women and young people

Beyond earning an income, Mrs Idute’e believes her business can encourage other women, especially mothers, to recognise their abilities and use their skills to support their families.

She hopes her experience will show that people do not always need large amounts of money or expensive equipment to begin a business.

Instead, they can start with the knowledge, skills and resources they already have and build gradually as opportunities arise.

“As a small business owner, I hope my journey inspires other people to start something of their own, even if they begin with limited resources. I believe every small business can make a positive difference in the community,” she said.

Through sewing and baking, she is providing services that people need for everyday life and special celebrations while demonstrating how practical skills can become a source of income.

Her message is particularly important for young people across Malaita Province who may have ideas for starting a business but feel discouraged by a lack of money or other resources.

Mrs Idute’e encourages them to believe in themselves, remain patient and be willing to learn.

“Start with the skills, knowledge, and resources you already have, and be willing to learn as you grow,” she said.

“There will be challenges and times when things do not go as planned, but do not give up easily. Be patient, work hard, manage your money wisely, and treat your customers with respect. Most importantly, trust God to guide your journey.”

She said young people should have the courage to take the first step instead of waiting until everything is perfect.

“Remember, every successful business starts with a first step, so have courage, take that step, and keep moving forward,” she said.

A dream for the future

Looking ahead, Mrs Idute’e wants to expand Auki Fashion & Occasional Cake and establish it as a well-known and trusted business in Auki and throughout Malaita Province.

She hopes to attract more customers, improve the quality of her sewing and baking services, and invest in better equipment and materials.

Her biggest goal is to establish her own business shop where she can operate both services more efficiently and reach more customers.

“In the next five years, I hope to have my own business shop where I can operate both sewing and baking services more efficiently,” she said.

She also hopes that future growth will allow her to create opportunities for other people to learn new skills and earn an income.

For Mrs Idute’e, success would mean more than expanding her business. It would also mean helping others discover their abilities and giving them the confidence to pursue their own goals.

“With hard work, determination, customer support, and God’s guidance, I believe I can achieve these goals,” she said.

As she continues to sew clothes and bake cakes from her home in Auki, Mrs Idute’e remains focused on building her business one order at a time.

Her journey is a reminder that success does not always begin with a large investment. Sometimes, it begins with a skill learned from a parent, a willingness to learn something new, and the courage to turn a passion into an opportunity.

Through Auki Fashion & Occasional Cake, Vivian Idute’e hopes to build a brighter future for her family while inspiring other women and young people in Malaita to believe in their talents.
