A new chapter in Solomon Islands sport is unfolding as the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) prepares to host the first-ever Women’s Rugby 15s trial match on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025.
With training sessions already well underway, around 26 female athletes have been consistently attending practices — a strong turnout that reflects the growing interest and commitment to women’s rugby across the country.
For the upcoming trial, players have been organised into two combined teams:
- Team 1 – Avaiki, Diesel, and SINU
- Team 2 – Tavuli, Crusaders, and SOSA
SIRUF has extended an open invitation to all women interested in the sport, encouraging new players to join and be part of this historic moment.
“We are witnessing an exciting new chapter for women’s rugby in the Solomon Islands,” said Sarah Buka, SIRUF’s Honiara Development Officer.

“This initiative is not just about playing the game — it’s about creating opportunities, building confidence, and empowering women through sports.
This milestone event is supported by Team Ryder, whose mentorship and development support have been described as “invaluable” by the Federation. The team’s commitment has helped prepare players both mentally and physically for the demands of the 15-a-side format — a first for many local athletes.
Special thanks were also given to rugby sevens legend William Ryder, along with mentors Eddie, Ben, Mitchie, and Dulo, for offering their expertise and encouragement, even amidst their busy schedules leading into the HRUA Semi Finals.

SIRUF says this Women’s 15s trial is just the beginning of wider efforts to develop the women’s game, create pathways for future national representation, and foster gender equality in sport.
With growing momentum and community support, the upcoming trial is shaping up to be a landmark moment for rugby and for women across the Solomon Islands.
