Women and girls from across Honiara gathered today to celebrate International Women’s Day, joining women around the world in recognizing the achievements and contributions of women in society.
The major celebration is being held in Honiara on March 10 and 11, 2026. This year’s event carries two inspiring themes: “Savve lo Raets Blong evri Women En Gels Fo Helpim Kamapum Gut Vois Blong Olketa” and “Aksonim Justice Fo Buildim Wanfala Seif En Ikol Future.”
The event brought together women leaders, young girls, community members and representatives from different groups. It was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Honiara, where speeches, discussions and activities focused on empowering women and girls.
In her keynote address, Acting Minister for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, Hon. Choylin Yim Douglas (MP), said this year’s celebration is guided by two important global themes.

“The first one is Gain, which is a call for all of us to support women through opportunities, mentorship, education and solidarity,” she said.
“The second one is Rights, Justice and Action for all women and girls.”
She said the message behind the themes is clear.
“This reminds us that equality must be supported by laws, protection and real action,” Hon. Douglas explained.
According to the Acting Minister, the themes are very relevant for the Solomon Islands, where women continue to play an important role in families and communities.
“When we invest in women, empower women and support women, the entire nation benefits,” she said.
“We all know that in Solomon Islands women play a central role in our society.”
She added that women carry many responsibilities in their homes and communities.
“Women are the backbone of our families, women are the strength of our communities, women are the guardians of our culture and traditions,” Hon. Douglas said.
The two-day celebration brought together representatives from government ministries, women’s organizations, civil society groups and members of the public. Many participants shared stories, ideas and experiences during the event.

For many women attending, the gathering was also a time to reflect on progress made in advancing women’s rights. At the same time, they acknowledged that challenges still remain.
Issues such as equal opportunities, safety, education and employment for women and girls were highlighted as areas that still need attention.
“Today we celebrate achievements, but we must also continue working together to build a more equal and just society,” Hon. Douglas said.
International Women’s Day is marked globally every year on March 8 to celebrate women’s achievements and promote gender equality in all areas of life.
