THE Royal Solomon Islands Police Force has welcomed the recent opening of the new Family Support Centre Branch in Gizo, Western Province.
A police constable and officer in charge of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Domestic Violence Unit (DV Unit), Imelda Ruia described the establishment of the Family Support Centre (FSC) office as a way forward to lessen the challenges faced by the Unit.
“The new office will help us a lot. Over the years, we find it hard counseling the victims of domestic violence,” said Ruia. “For now, it would be easy for those trained to do counseling rather than victims going through Police for counseling.”
Most times, the first entry of victims experiencing domestic violence or gender-based violence is through the Police, and we often receive information. If it is a case then we can establish the case. But to do counseling on the victims is not easy says Constable Imelda Ruia.
She said now that the new office is here, we can now refer victims of domestic violence straight to FSC to help free them from their trauma.
