THE traditional method of coconut oil extraction has adapted a new mixture with the natural fibres of Neem tree and seaweed. The new method has now been widely practiced in the country because of its profound health benefits to humans.
Dorothy Ngaro, a female market vendor has made earns meet from pure coconut oil, seaweed oil and Neem oil sales at the Honiara Central Market. The method is to prepare the heated virgin coconut oil extraction with the added separate mix of neem leaves and seaweed on kitchen pot.
“I have been selling three different oil products at the central market for three years. The oils that I sell are pure coconut oil, seaweed oil and Neem oil,” she told Solomon Women.
Ngaro is from Malaita province and has initially established her small coconut oil business in 2015.
“Both Neem oil and seaweed oil are well known in the Honiara and other provinces for its healing abilities and health benefits,” she said.
She says her engagement in the marketing of the products has financially benefited her family.
“I very comfortable and proud with what am doing in terms of supporting my family’s important basic needs and wants. I have managed to cope with the school fee payments of my children’s education.”
Ngaro highlighted that although high unemployment is a major problem in the country; it does not mean we have no options to earn money for a living or to support our family.
“I believe self employment is a major option we must consider nowadays. We have a lot of opportunities available to make and earn money. Setting up a small economic activities or businesses is not impossible but we need to find other simple ways to make it happen,” she said.
