Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health Medical Services, Pauline McNeil, has announced the establishment of the Permanent Secretary Women’s Leadership Initiative Committee, marking a strong step toward empowering women in the health sector.
She made the announcement during her speech at the Women in Leadership and launch event held on 10th December, where staff and partners gathered to celebrate women leaders.
“It is also my privilege to formally establish the Permanent Secretary Women’s Leadership Initiative Committee,” the PS said.
McNeil said the committee will include 40 inspiring representatives from across the ministry, national programmes, provincial health services, hospitals, finance, and administration, together with partners from DFAT and the Southern Islands Australia Health Partnership.
She explained that the committee will play a central role in governance and oversight, including application processes, selection, and ongoing support for current and future women leaders.
“The committee will support women campaigning for equity and inclusion across all levels of the health system,” she said. “It will identify practical initiatives such as mentoring programmes, professional exchanges, speaking opportunities, and leadership training to build confidence.”
She added that the committee will also advise on policy reforms and workplace improvements that help women step into leadership roles, with strong support from men working in the sector.
The Permanent Secretary thanked all members who agreed to serve on the committee and recognised their commitment to positive change.
“I want to express my sincere appreciation to the committee members who have agreed to serve. Your leadership is crucial to the success of this initiative,” she said.
She said the launch shows a ministry ready for change, where women’s leadership is recognised, supported, valued, and embedded across all levels of the health system. The initiative aims to inspire future generations.
