Fula Explains the Discipline Behind Sports Participation
UNLIKE many other social activities that involves character building, sports is one of the most effective discipline tools girls can use to reach their goals.
According to the assistant coach of the Solomon Islands National Woman Football Team that represented the country in the recent 2017 Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu, Prudence Fula, sports is a catalyst for achieving discipline among young girls and women in the country.
“I would like to encourage more young women and girls in the country to engage in sports because it can prevent them from associating in unlawful and anti-social activities that many youth have involved in today.
“Sports are important ingredients that are crucial in shaping the lives of young girls to become discipline citizens in the future,” she added.
Fula told Solomon Women Sports that the main reason to have a career in football was because she believes in self-discipline, great fitness and good health.
“Football has provided me an excellent platform for discipline and character building – both on and off the field of play and it has helped me a lot to reach my goals in life and career.
“I believe sports has motivated me to test my discipline and I have seen a lot of benefits in my career in football because I have taught myself to push hard and teach the value of discipline,” she said.
Fula plays both football and rugby. Her interest in football started in 1991 and has continued to develop until today.
“Am passionate to play both rugby and football because I believe both sports are very disciplined and both have strong set of rules which are important in the development of my confidence, skills, value in hard work and fitness,” she said.
As a former member of the Solomon Islands senior national women football team, Prudence has also in few occasions represented the country in overseas football competitions. Last year, she joined the first local women’s rugby team – “The Royals” to compete in a rugby competition held in Suva, Fiji.
“I was initial introduced to rugby in 2007 and later joined the first established female rugby team called the Royals.
“As football player, in several occasions I have also been selected in the senior national women to play overseas football competitions like in Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, PNG, Auckland,” she recalled.
Prudence has recently represented the country with her team in the recent 2017 South Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu on December.
“I am proud to attend the 2017 South Pacific Mini Games as a assistant coach for the Solomon Islands national women football team. This has been a new experience for me especially to represent the country as a assistant coach.”
