Honiara-based Makira/Ulawa people have over the weekend marked the province’s 38th Second Appointed Day in Honiara.
Those in the province have marked the big day earlier, graced with the presence of the Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare and delegation.
Guest Speaker during the celebrations for Makirans here in Honiara, Doreen Kuper called on all Leaders in the province to support women and girls.
Mrs. Kuper said women should be empowered in all works of life, irrespective of their cultural heritage – Matrilineal or Patrilineal.
“This is the winning way. Women must be empowered and encouraged to be involved in education and trainings, medicine and health, Agriculture, business and commercial, sports, church, village grouping etc…,” Mrs. Kuper said.
She said that it is and will always be the culture that binds everyone together – because in Solomon Islands culture, people are taught to respect each other.
“It is easy to be divided. Unity takes effort, and a willingness to respect each other – it is our customs and our culture that binds us together,” Mrs. Kuper said.
Mrs. Kuper in the meantime, pointed out that if Makira province wants to progress positively, follow the Holy Bible.
“It has been said that 95% of the law of the land comes from the bible,” She said.
The celebrations to mark the day included speeches from prominent figures in the province including former Governor General and senior statesman, Sir Nathaniel Waena and Retired Archbishop George Takeli.
The day ended with entertainments which shows the rich traditional customs practised in the province.
