SAINT Nicholas College in partnership with the Australian Government had recently launched a children storybook at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara.

The launch was part of the project supported by the Australia National Commission for UNESCO and facilitated jointly by members of Sunshine Gallery and the College of Arts and Education, Victoria University Melbourne, Australia.

The book entitled, ‘Words and Pictures in Solomon Islands’ is originated from pictures and stories produced by students of Saint Nicholas College and translated into stories and poems by students of Foot Scary West primary school in Melbourne, Australia.

Speaking during the official launching program, Dr Irene Paulse confirmed the program signifies the launching of the book’s second edition.

“The first launch was held on October, last year in Melbourne and the second launch of this book rules the margin of this project. Therefore, am very happy and rewarded to have involved in this project,” she told Solomon Women.

Dr Irene is a native from Solomon Islands. She lives in Melbourne, Australia and lecturers at the Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia.

She said that the main idea of this project is purposely is to link children in Australia and other countries to learn from each other’s cultures through their art of work.

“It is a very simple concept which gives a powerful message through the children’s pictures and drawings. It is also interesting to see how children show that they care for the environment through their pictures and offers visual explanations of cultures and ways of Solomon Islanders,” Dr Irene said.

Reading is one of the most important things a child will learn to do at school. Being able to read and developing a love of books and reading can have a hugely positive impact on your child’s education, as well as bringing them lots of enjoyment.

The program was marked with the presentation of books and awards to the Saint Nicholas College students that participated in the initial stages of the project’s development.
