AUSTRALIA’S Ambassador for Gender Equality, Ms. Stephanie Copus Campbell, recently wrapped up a visit to the Solomon Islands, where she had the chance to meet with many inspiring women making an impact across the country.
In an exclusive interview with the Solomon Women’s Newspaper, Ms. Campbell shared her admiration for the remarkable women she encountered and the important work being done to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
“This is a great opportunity to meet amazing people and women, and I’ve been deeply impressed with their quality of thinking and their strategies for engaging with the world. They approach issues with both their minds and hearts,” said Ms. Campbell.
During her visit, Ms. Campbell connected with women from a range of different backgrounds who have actively engaged in various partnership programs between Australia and the Solomon Islands. She had the chance to witness firsthand the impact of these programs, including the UN Women ‘Markets for Change’ project, supported by the Australian Government, which empowers women at the Munda Market.
“It was a great opportunity to meet with women from the Western Province at the market and to see the work Australia is doing with them through the market program,” she said, reflecting on the meaningful exchange that took place.
Ms. Campbell also attended the opening of a girls’ dormitory at the Tabaka Rural Training Centre, where she met with leaders and students who shared their stories, dreams, and aspirations for the future. The interaction reinforced the importance of providing young women with opportunities for education and empowerment.
One of the highlights of her visit was engaging with women in business and politics. She spoke with them about the challenges they face, how they can learn from one another, and how their collective voices can create a stronger, more supportive community. Ms. Campbell emphasized the need to continue breaking down barriers for women, particularly in business, and mentioned Australia’s contribution through funding to the Solomon Islands Business Association to support these efforts.
“Supporting women in business is key to creating long-term change, and we’re pleased to be partnering with local organizations to address the barriers women face,” she said.
Throughout her visit, Ms. Campbell was inspired by the resilience, strength, and determination of the women she met and is committed to continuing her work alongside the Solomon Islands to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
