Afu Billy, President of the Solomon Islands National Council of Women (SINCW), has been recognized for her outstanding leadership with the Australia Awards Solomon Islands Alumni Women’s Leadership Award 2026. She received the award during the International Women’s Day celebration on Tuesday.

Ms Billy said she feels deeply honored to receive the award and thanked the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for the recognition.

“It is a privilege and an honor to receive this award,” she said. “But this award is not just for me; it is for all women in the Solomon Islands.”

She explained that women play leadership roles every day, not only in formal positions but also in their homes and communities. “All women in the country are leaders in their own rights,” Ms Billy said. “In our homes, women care for children, make sure there is food on the table, and guide decisions in their communities.”

Through her award, Ms Billy hopes to inspire women across the Solomon Islands to continue leading and making a difference in their homes, communities, and the nation.

Ms Billy also highlighted women’s contributions at the national and provincial levels. “Women contribute to the development of the country just by doing their roles in the community,” she said. “Women in Solomon Islands are very resilient. Even when they do not have money, they make sure their families are cared for. In times of disasters, women are always there to support their families, often working with their husbands.”

She said receiving the award on behalf of all women is a proud moment. “This award is for all women in leadership positions in the Solomon Islands,” she said.

Ms Billy also spoke about the importance of justice for women, pointing out that much work remains. “This year’s theme is a reminder for decision-makers and duty bearers to do their jobs for women in the Solomon Islands,” she said.

She emphasized that women’s contributions are often overlooked. “Women in the Solomon Islands contribute very much and should be recognized, not only on International Women’s Day but every day,” Ms Billy said.

The SINCW President called on the government to work closely with organizations like NCW to ensure that women’s rights and needs are recognized and acted upon. “Our government must listen, endorse, and take action for women,” she said.
