QUALIFIED technician, Olwyn Ratu Tuaki maintains big dreams with optimism about her future business and technician career. Being a mother is not a problem for Olwyn as she edges much closer towards her bag of dreams.
“I have started my floral art business eight years ago and I have provided my expertise and service on to my customers on special occasions like wedding ceremonies and other special functions. Sometimes locals and organisations come to hire my flowers to use on special occasions,” she told Solomon Women.
Olwyn has a full-size green house, which she grows and accommodates her variety of pot plants.
As a trained technician, she still has the determination and ambition of furthering her trades in electrical studies in the future.
“My aim is to broaden my set of skills and knowledge in my profession as a technician. Solomon Islands still lack the number of qualified women technicians; after all by observing the trend, it has triggered my desire to further my trainings in that direction,” she said.
Mrs Tuaki has spent almost five years working as a qualified technician in the public sector of employment. She quit her job because she believed the salary she earned was not enough to support her family’s immediate needs and wants.
“I decided to start up my own business in order to improve my family’s standard of living and to be able to cater for my immediate household and social needs like my children’s school fees other basic necessities,” she said.
She had previously bought a car to venture into the local business of transport service in Honiara.
“The money saved through my business activities has been my so called strength and an extra bonus to fulfil my short-term and long term dreams,” she said.
Mrs Tuaki is very optimistic of achieving her dreams and visions and has stressed that many people today complained more about the expensive standard of living and how things are getting tough in Honiara, however I sees such views as excuses of making a progress for their families.
“There is a lot of business opportunities to make money available in Honiara. We must try our best to make use of our talents in order to support our family.
“All men and women have their own God talents, skills, knowledge and wisdom, and therefore the only thing is to be creative and innovative in order to start a small business activity that will financially benefit your family.
Now that Olwyn is satisfied with her small income generating activities, she has no excuses left in her bag of dreams but to make progress into the future.
