Two women Members of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands are participating in the Tuākana-Teina, Whenua, Talanoa Wānanga – Pacific Women’s Wānanga, hosted by the Parliament of New Zealand in Wellington from 28 to 30 July 2026.
Representing the National Parliament are Hon. Choy Lin Yim Douglas and Hon. Catherine Launa, accompanied by Ms. Angelina Zarmellar Nunumae, Parliamentary Committee Secretary.
The three-day regional programme brings together women parliamentarians from across the Pacific to strengthen leadership, foster professional networks, exchange parliamentary experiences, and promote greater collaboration among women leaders. The programme forms part of the Tai a Kiwa – Stronger Pacific Parliaments Programme, an initiative of the New Zealand Parliament that supports stronger parliamentary institutions and enhanced cooperation among Pacific legislatures.
Held under the theme “Decision-making and Influencing Change Across the Pacific,” the Wānanga provides participants with opportunities to deepen their knowledge and leadership capabilities while strengthening the practical skills required to effectively serve in elected office and contribute to democratic governance.
The programme also provides a forum for participants to engage in discussions on leadership, governance, parliamentary representation, public engagement, and the opportunities and challenges facing women in political leadership throughout the Pacific. Through dialogue and the exchange of experiences and good practices, participants are encouraged to strengthen women’s participation in democratic institutions and decision-making processes.
Participation in the Pacific Women’s Wānanga reflects the National Parliament of Solomon Islands’ ongoing commitment to promoting women’s leadership, enhancing parliamentary effectiveness, and strengthening regional cooperation through constructive partnerships with fellow Pacific legislatures.
The National Parliament acknowledges with appreciation the Government and Parliament of New Zealand for hosting the programme and for their continued support through the Tai a Kiwa – Stronger Pacific Parliaments Programme, which continues to make a valuable contribution to parliamentary capacity development and regional cooperation across the Pacific.
