The success of the Markets for Change (M4C) program comes directly from the dedication and leadership of Solomon Islanders themselves. Representatives of the Project Working Committee (PWC) and Project Management Committee (PMC) continue to drive positive change across the central markets in Auki, Buala, Gizo and Honiara, ensuring that market spaces evolve into safer, more inclusive and resilient environments for all.

Last week, committee members gathered to review project progress, strengthen partnerships, and agree on priority actions for the next six months — a clear sign of strong local ownership and commitment.

Since 2021, Australia has supported the UN Women M4C Project with AUD 2.9 million, helping transform marketplaces into spaces where women vendors can work with dignity, safety and opportunity. Through this partnership, markets are becoming places where women can grow their businesses, strengthen their livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.

The M4C initiative continues to champion gender equality and economic empowerment, ensuring that women vendors — many of whom are the backbone of local economies have access to safe, vibrant and sustainable marketplaces.

This is a story of women leading change, communities working together, and development shaped by the people it serves.
