Sulufou Island sits on the golden waters of Lau Lagoon in northeast Malaita Province, Solomon Islands. It is one of the oldest artificial islands in the region, built by generations using coral and stone. Families live close together, and life moves with the sea. Fishing, community work, and tradition shape daily living. The ocean is both home and teacher. From this strong and historic place comes Treza Diana Konare, a young woman whose story connects island tradition with modern education and hope for the future.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with SOLOMON WOMEN, Treza Diana Konare, 25, is the eldest granddaughter in her family and the first university graduate in her lineage.

“I am a 25-year-old from Sulufou Island in Malaita Province. I am the eldest granddaughter in my family, a role that has taught me responsibility, leadership, and the importance of setting a good example for my younger brothers and sisters. I am also proud to be the first grandchild in my family to graduate from university, an achievement that reflects my dedication and the support of my family.

“After finishing my foundation studies at Selwyn College I began my tertiary studies at the university of the South Pacific (USP) Honiara campus, where I completed my first year of study. This is because I want to stay close to home to help care for my sick grandmother. After my grandmothers passing in 2023, Then I transferred to Laucala campus in Suva, Fiji where I completed my second and third years.

“Initially, I was registered in a bachelor of commerce program, majoring in politics and international relations because I was interested in governance and how policies shaped societies. However, after completing my foundation studies in 2021, I was later offered a scholarship to study social work and sociology, which led me to reconsider my path. I saw this as a meaningful opportunity to focus more directly on people and communities. My interest then grew from a desire to better understand social issues at the grassroots level and to actively contribute to improving the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities.  This shift aligns closely with my passion for helping others and giving back to my community.

“Reflecting back on my study journey, one of the most significant challenges I faced was during my first year of study, when I had to balance my academic responsibilities with caring for my grandmother while she was unwell. It was a difficult time emotionally and physically, as I had to manage my coursework while also being present for my family. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but I learned to prioritize my time, stay organized and remain focused on my goals. I also drew strength from my sense of responsibility and the support of those around me. This experience taught me resilience, patience and the importance of perseverance, which helped me continue and succeed in my studies.

“Discipline, hard work, resilience and strong support were key. Staying committed even when things got difficult helped me push through. Having encouragement from family, friends and lecturers kept me motivated. Additionally, believing in my values of education and its purpose gave me a strong sense of direction.

“This degree has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to better understand social issues affecting my community. I now feel more confident in contributing to programs and initiatives that promotes social wellbeing, advocate for vulnerable groups, raise awareness about social issues and support community development in the Solomon Islands

“For me Learning about social justice, human rights and community empowerment has been incredibly empowering.it changes how I perceive the world and has shaped my understanding that leadership is about service, empathy and advocating for others. I’ve learned that even small actions can contribute to meaningful social change.

“By reflecting on my career journey, my advice to young women and others is to believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams. You have the ability to succeed, even when the journey feels difficult.  Always have in mind that Education is a powerful tool for change and don’t hesitate to seek support from your lecturers when need.

“One memorable experience was during my second- and third-year fieldwork where I had the opportunity to interact directly with individuals facing real life challenges. Seeing their struggles, resilience and hearing their stories reminded me why I chose this path and strengthened my commitment to making a difference.

“If I could share this achievement with anyone, it would be my late grandmother Kitty Diana Wate This accomplishment is a tribute to her unwavering support for me throughout my education. From my primary years through secondary school, she stood faithfully by my side, always cheering and encouraging me to do my best, aim higher and never settle for less than what I’m capable of. Because of her, I’ve learned the value of hard work, perseverance and believing in myself.

“She played an important role in my educational journey, making sacrifices and offering constant guidance that shaped the person I am today. It saddens me that she is not here to witness this great achievement, but I carry her memory with me in this moment. This milestone is as much hers as it is mine, and I dedicate it to her with deep gratitude and love.

“I would also like to share this achievement with my younger brothers and sisters. As the eldest granddaughter and the first in my family to graduate from university, I hope that by achieving this milestone, I can be an example to them- which dreams are worth chasing no matter how difficult the journey may be. I want them to see that with determination, hard work and faith, anything is possible. I hope this milestone inspires them to pursue their own dreams with confidence and resilience.

“Finally, I am also deeply thankful for my family, friends and lecturers who stood by me throughout this journey. Their support, patience and belief in me gave me the strength to keep going. I would not have made it this far without them.   With this, I give all praise and honors back to the man above,” she said.
