The Australia Defence Force (ADF) women’s futsal team made a special visit to St. Mary’s School Tanagai in North West Guadalcanal on Wednesday morning.

The team brought gifts of sports equipment for the students and spent time playing games and taking part in fun activities with them.

The school field was filled with excitement as children ran, laughed, and eagerly joined the visiting team. Many students said they were happy to meet the players and learn new sports skills from them.

Commander Jose Bascunan said the purpose of the visit was to inspire young people, especially girls, to take part in sports. “Playing with the students and engaging with them is our way of hoping to bring their passion for sports to life. We want them to know they can continue in sports if they want to,” he said. He also encouraged students to stay focused on their education. “Education is important for building a better future for themselves,” he added.

The ADF team said they felt overwhelmed with joy after seeing how excited the students were. They were happy to give sports equipment to the school and promised to return for another visit in the future.

The ADF women’s futsal team will also take part in an exhibition match against the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force women’s futsal team on Friday, 28 November, at the Friendship Hall. Throughout the week, the team will continue visiting communities and taking part in activities around Honiara.
