FORTY-FIVE (45) literacy students successfully graduated with certificates of completing 12 weeks of literacy course held on Friday 30th June at the Jericho Community, SSEC church in Honiara.
Literature Association Solomon Islands (LASI) Coordinator, Pricilla Maenuita told SOLOMON WOMEN that the completion of the training marked the completion of a 12-week literacy course held for youths and adults.
She said the training aims to provide the opportunity for youths and adults who have left formal education quite early with very little literacy skills or who might not at all attend any formal education.
The targeted groups within the community were 16 years of age and up and the adult population.
Pricilla also said the literacy training held in Jericho is the work of the Literature Association Solomon Islands (LASI) in partnership with the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE) funded by AusAID and the World Bank.
She said that LASI was contracted by CAUSE to provide literacy training which aims to help those who are interested to undergo training with CAUSE so that they may be able to enter into short-term employment under the CAUSE project.
“We are working closely with CAUSE to employ youths and adults so that with the literacy skills acquired from this training, they can be able to also undergo training under CAUSE and later find short employment,” she said.
The coordinator said that they have been working in 3 batches in 10 locations providing 10 literacy classes per batch. The training held in Jericho is in batch 3 which is the final batch.
The literacy students were from Jericho 1 and 2 and the surrounding communities. The program ended with entertainment activities.
